Here are some of my favorite plates in my collection.
Pre-state plates: Before the state required vehicle registration, many cities in Kansas required vehicles to be registered at the city hall. Some cities just issued the vehicle owner a number and it was the responsibility of the owner to have a plate made. These were often made of leather with metal numbers and letters attached. Other cities provided the plate and these were most often made of porcelain, brass, or aluminum. Most of these plates were issued between 1908 and July, 1913. I am always looking to buy Kansas, city issued, pre-state plates.
Kansas state issued plates: July 1, 1913, Kansas began requiring license plates statewide. This superseded the city required plates. The state had these plates made and issued them through the county courthouses.
